Have you ever wondered why exactly does your mom hurts when you are sitting on the chair for an extended duration? No! Of course not, we just wiggle our bum around a bit hoping to alleviate the pain, and it usually indeed does the job alright.
The Reason?
So why exactly does it hurt, well actually the reason is simple. When we are sitting down, most of our weight is focused on specific parts of our bum as our bum actually has bone and is not perfectly squishy in nature. These so-called pressure points reduce blood flow and cause a lack of oxygen in these parts of our bum which then becomes painful after a while. This is why wiggling our bum helps with the pain, as we shift the pressure point to a different location in our bum.
The Solution?
So you may be thinking what exactly is the solution? The solution is actually quite simple in theory, you just need to alleviate the presence of pressure points and your bum will have less of a hard time when sitting for long durations.
There are three main types of materials that are commonly used for making sofas, baywindow seats and beds.
Table to compare typical foam, latex, spring baywindow seat and mattresses
Type of Material | Foam | Latex | Spring |
Pros | Medium durability Made synthetically of polyurethane. Feels Springy in nature. Very high heat retaining properties and not designed for airflow. Low Cost option | Very durable and can outlast spring. Consists of natural ingredients, and is more environmentally friendly. Natural resistance to dust mites, mold, and bacteria. Excellent support can adapt to your body shape, allowing pressure points to sink in while supporting the rest of your body. The result is that you should be able to sleep without pain. Good Airflow qualities, a great choice for warm climates such as Hong Kong. | Quite bouncy and reactive to motion A synthetic product Able to provide firm support, springy in nature. Allows easy airflow, so will feel cooler than foam and latex type mattresses. A relatively economic option. |
Cons | Will not outlast latex or spring counterparts. Poor ventilation qualities, feels warm to sleep on. | Expensive due to the use of natural ingredients. | Less durable, may be susceptible to sagging as springs are worn out with prolonged use. Unable to support the body in a uniform fashion and may cause pain at pressure points |
